Bengal Saree Tradition

Indian sarees are considered to be one of the most ethnic and graceful attires for the women. There are many styles available like Guajarati or seedha Pallo style Bengali or Oriya saree style ulta Pallo style maharashtrain style tribal style lehenga Style etc.

Bengal handloom is very ancient. Various varieties famous in Bengal handloom tradition are –

Baluchari – This saree from Bengal is standard five yards in length. Baluchar is a small district in West Bengal where baluchari sarees are woven since ages. The field of the saree is covered with small butis and a beautiful floral design runs across the edges. Baluchari sarees are famous for their elaborate borders and pallo. The anchal has amazing and unique design narrative with motifs. Common colors used for baluchari saree are red, purple and neptune blue.

Tant – Its transparent saree. Tant means handloom in Bengali. Tant sarees are crisp muslin like finish with elaborate pallos and is incorporated with threadwork borders. They are light and appropriate for hot and humid summers of West Bengal.

Jamdanies – Its light and transparent handloom saree. Different type of colors and patterns are its unique feature. Styles like flowers, tribal geometry and peacocks are the most popular ones. Jamdanies are particularly hailed in transparent handloom cotton saree.

Shantipuri – The "Shantipuri" sarees are named after the small village "Shantipur" in Nadia District of West Bengal. These saree have a very fine soft and smooth texture.

Garad silk – These sarees are famous for pooja, festivals or anything auspicious. They consist of plain red borders set against a natural ground with off white, cream, and white as common. These saree are crafted with self zari work to give it a grace.

Kanthas work – derived from the Bengali word "naksha" which refers to artistic patterns. The sarees are hand-embroidered with different designs and prints like animal prints, ancient civilization, history, trees, flowers etc.
