Big, Bold And Beautiful: Fabulous Plus-Size Fashion Tips

Let’s face it, not everybody who adores fashion is as skinny as a runway model. Unfortunately, it is common for “normal” people to feel intimidated by high fashion designs, as they are often geared toward an unrealistic, ultra-thin consumer. Additionally, everywhere you turn there are magazine ads, commercials, television shows and movies that feature women of a single body type. Sometimes, all of the messages that the media sends out to the world on the ideal female body type can be really discouraging for plus size women. However, being a little bit bigger than a size two is not the end of the world in life or in fashion design. The trick to looking great is just to know how and where to shop, and how to dress for your particular size and shape! If you have a plus-size figure, then you’re in luck! Our fashion school wardrobe experts have written a list of tips to keep plus-size fashionistas looking truly beautiful.

1. Try and buy in person. Shopping online is so much fun! However, for plus-sizers, it can be awfully risky. As cute and well-cut as something looks online, you’ll never know how it truly falls on your figure until you try it on in person. In order to stay on the safe side, it’s best to go out shopping and try stuff on in person before parting with your hard-earned dollars.

2. Know your measurements. A key trick to successful plus-size shopping is to come prepared with the knowledge of your body’s exact measurements. Since the variety of clothes in larger sizes is slightly more limited than the size zeros, ones, twos, and fours that line the racks, you’ll save yourself a lot of time by asking upfront if a garment comes in your size. This tip is especially key for lingerie shopping, where sizing is often very particular. Ask a friend to measure your waist, bust, and hip sizes, and then save it in your phone, or in a wallet pocket.

3. Find the fit. Once you know your measurements, stick to them. Plus-size women often have the tendency to buy clothes that fit them too loosely, because they feel self-conscious about their size. But all women are beautiful in their own way. Especially those that know how to dress themselves. If you have full hips and a curvy waist, don’t be afraid to accentuate them. At the same time, don’t abuse your curves, by picking clothes that fit too tightly. This won’t feel comfortable, and you’ll appear as uncomfortable as you’ll feel.

4. Get the essentials. There is said to be a few classic pieces that every woman should have in her wardrobe. For instance, one black cocktail dress, a great white shirt, one well-fitted pair of jeans, one pair of boots, and one pair of heels. If you commit to finding the perfectly fitting classic pieces, then you’ll always look good.

Don’t be intimidated by an unrealistic view of the ultra-thin, nonexistent woman. Embrace your body, and your love of fashion design, and most importantly, stay true to your size.
