Tangled's Rapunzel was definitely a cutie in Disney's animated CGI film, but even before Disney did their take on the classic fairytale, a woman's hair has always been considered her crowning glory. With that said, this brings up the age-old question of: do guys prefer long or short hair on women? If you want to attract men, should you go with long, flowing locks or a sportier, shorter hairstyle?
For centuries, people have held on to the belief that men generally prefer longer hair on women since longer hair is naturally more attractive while shorter hair can be seen as boyish or masculine – and can be perceived as being unattractive. The question is: do these age-old beliefs still hold true today?
Science has proven it
According the scientific studies, the answer is in the positive.
In an experiment conducted by Professor Tamas Bereckzkei from Hungary's Universtiy of Pecs, the psychology professor put various hairstyles on female faces to the scientific test.
It was discovered that the longer hairstyles always consistently outscored the shorter hairstyles in terms of perceived attractiveness on female faces. Just as the age-old beliefs dictated, longer hairstyles meant an increase in perceived attractiveness while shorter hairstyles saw a decrease in attractiveness.
In a separate study by the Daily Mail Reporter conducted on a sample population of 3,000 men, a large percentage of 43% of the respondents preferred the longer hairstyles on women while the rest of the respondents had varying answers with no degree of consistency. When asked, the respondents mostly said that long hair looks more sexy and feminine on women.
In another study by the research journal called, Human Nature, it was shown that men prefer longer hair on women as well and that using a longer hairstyle can actually increase the attractiveness of a woman who used to have a shorter hairstyle.
Increasing your own attractiveness
What we can learn from these different studies is that men generally prefer women with longer hair and that growing your hair longer and switching to a different hairstyle can actually increase your perceived attractiveness as a woman. Of course, if you do plan to change your hairstyle for the purpose of attracting men, just make sure that you are comfortable with these changes. After all, your hairstyle is a part of who you are and you should not have to make any compromises with who you are just for the sake of being more attractive.
