Patriots vs. Titans live score, updates, highlights from NFL wild-card playoff game



The Patriots didn’t expect to be playing this weekend, but then they lost to the Dolphins in Week 17.

New England seemed on its way to a 10th consecutive first-round bye until that defeat, so now coach Bill Belichick’s squad will play the Titans in the first round.

Tennessee (9-7) is in the playoffs for the second time in the past three years, having secured a wild-card berth in the final weekend. Running back Derrick Henry won the NFL rushing crown, gaining 1,540 yards on 303 carries.

While they may not have the first-round bye, the Patriots (12-4) still won the AFC East. The defense is one of the best in recent memory; it led the league in a slew of categories, including points allowed (14.1 per game), yards allowed (275.9 per game) and interceptions (25).

10:25 p.m.: Tennessee narrowly avoids a turnover, as Tannehill fumbles but falls on it.

10:18 p.m.: An ineligible man downfield penalty wipes out a huge Patriots gain. A third-and-15 screen goes nowhere, and New England punts it back to Tennessee.

Halftime: Titans 14, Patriots 13

9:46 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN, Titans. An absolute statement drive from Henry. He gets the ball five times on a seven-play drive and picks up all 75 yards, finishing with a 1-yard score with 35 seconds left before halftime. Titans 14, Patriots 13.

9:32 p.m.: FIELD GOAL, Patriots. A huge goal-line stand from Tennessee, avoiding giving up a touchdown from first-and-goal from the 1. Three straight run stuffs. Patriots 13, Titans 7.

9:20 p.m.: Now three punts in a row. A good return will start New England on the Tennessee 47.

9:07 p.m.: Tennessee punts, the first possession for either team that hasn’t ended in points.

9:02 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN, Patriots. Julian Edelman with a 5-yard run to put New England back on top. Patriots 10, Titans 7.

9:00 p.m.: The Patriots are inside the 10-yard line as the first quarter ends. They’ve used a lot of screen passes and runs to get there.

8:47 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN, Titans. Tennessee answers with a 12-play series capped by a 12-yard pass from quarterback Ryan Tannehill to tight end Anthony Firkser. Titans 7, Patriots 4.

8:34 p.m.: FIELD GOAL, Patriots. Odd drive ends in three points. Couple of near-interceptions from Brady, but the Patriots score on the opening drive. Patriots 3, Titans 0.

8:28 p.m.: Tom Brady with an incredibly ill-advised throw as he’s being sacked. It just goes straight up in the air, and he’s lucky it’s not intercepted by a defensive lineman.

8:26 p.m.: New England begins with the ball after a touchback.

8:05 p.m.: This game was supposed to start at 8:15 but has been pushed back 10 minutes due to the Bills/Texans game going long.
