‘For all unhappy phrases of tongue or pen, / The saddest are these: ‘It may need been!’ ”
I hold pondering of what occurred at Tora Bora. What a richly consequential screw-up it was, and the way completely different the approaching years may need been, the entire journey may need been, if we’d gotten it proper.
From the 2009 Senate Overseas Relations Committee report “Tora Bora Revisited: How We Didn’t Get bin Laden and Why It Issues As we speak”:
“On October 7, 2001, U.S. plane started bombing the coaching bases and strongholds of Al Qaeda and the ruling Taliban throughout Afghanistan. The leaders who despatched murderers to assault the World Commerce Middle and the Pentagon lower than a month earlier and the rogue authorities that offered them sanctuary had been working for his or her lives. President George W. Bush’s expression of America’s want to get Osama bin Laden ‘useless or alive’ appeared about to return true.”
The struggle was to be swift and lethal, with clear goals: defeat the Taliban, destroy al Qaeda and kill or seize its chief, Osama bin Laden. Already the Taliban had been swept from energy, al Qaeda ousted from its havens. American deaths had been stored to a minimal.
